The pumpkins on the left photograph  are on Roy deacons plot (55). The pumpkins on the right are Sandra deacons (plot 59). Ripening nicely.

This is a photograph taken today of Sandra Deacons awesome pumpkin collection she has grown from seeds. She plants them every growing season & they seem to get better every year. Well done to Sandra & thanks for agreeing to the photograph. 19/9/19 MB

This butterfly is called a “PAINTED LADY”  vanessa (Cynthia)cardui,also know as “Papilio Bella Donna”this the is the upperside of the male however there can be varients in colour ..European painted ladies come mainly from the desert edges of north africa and arabia.IN some years you can see 100’s to 1000’s and some years in can be very scarce .So far this year it has been a good year for them ..5 have been seen on the site ..So keep a look out for them. 31/7/19 Thanks Mick Cooper for sending the picture & info in.

Photographs below by Mick Cooper (plot 12E) Mick Says ” with all the rain we have had it should be a good year for our potatoes, long as it knows when to stop. The beetroot Boltardy & parsnip “Gladiator” have all done well so far this season. The “Nimbus” sweet pea on the right photograph, not too sure about this one regards scent, Kings Seeds give it three ticks for scent I cant agree with that, but it looks good though”  Cheers Mick 26/6/19

These pictures are of Reg Brook (Plot 49 & 50) cutting the grass areas on the main path for the last time until spring next year.

These photos were taken by Mark Burton showing pictures of the new boundary fence on the new car park erected up by Tony Paine & Mark Burton. One of the photos shows the small garden we have created planting 2 x rose trees, lavender, daffodils & tulip bulbs for next Spring. Martin Kennard planted all the bulbs ready for next year.

This picture was taken by Mick Cooper a Hoverfly called “The batman hoverfly”  (Myathropa Florea) If you closely look at the thorax you can make out what looks like the batman character logo.  Thanks Mick for sharing the picture with us all !

This is a picture of a hover fly (Syrphus Ribesii) taken by Mick Cooper. Mick says “This hover fly helps the gardener by eating small insects but it has succumbed to a predator the spider you can just see it caught up in a fine web”.

Top picture on right is of Mark Burton Plot 14. Middle right is of a globe artichoke flower being attacked by black fly. If you look closer you can see an army of ants on the plant stem coming to eat the black fly. Bottom picture is of daisies just hanging in there

Mick Hogan (Our Chairman) He’s just picked his first crop of strawberries.  He looks really pleased with them this year !!!

These pictures were sent in by Jenny & Marcella who occupy plot 42W they have transformed this plot since taking it over in June 2017, building there own shed & making the plot their own. They have both worked hard in there first year on the site & now are beginning to reap the rewards (well done to the both of them).

The picture on the left is of Mark Burton’s dog & the picture on the right is his fence to keep the dog under control on the site. It was made out of an old bed that someone had brought on as scrap metal.

The picture on the left is of Hazel Spindley who is on Plot 41 on our site, the picture on the right is of Mick Coopers leeks on his plot ready for transplanting into the ground. Thanks Mick for sending in these pictures.

These 2 x photos have been sent in by Mick Cooper the picture on the left is the larva (early stages of growth) of the Cinnabar moth it will be seen around July. The picture on the right is the (overwinters as a Pupa – mature stage of the Cinnabar moth) usually seen from Mid May – August it flies in the sunshine but is easily disturbed.

Mick Cooper took these pictures the one on the left hand side is of Jenny & Marcella on their plot 42W (Taking in some sunshine – down on the allotment). The picture on the right is the tendrils of the (Vicia Cracca – which is a wild growing flower)

Here are Marie & Jim Darlows (Plot 4) onion sets that they planted in modules to start them off. I think you would agree ” The results are great” They trialed this system for the first  time” & Marie told me they are going to start them off in modules again next year. Picture sent in by Mick Cooper Plot 12 E  – Mick says ” My allotment plot is looking a bit bare but all is ready for the coming season. As with most people on the allotments swede,leeks,parsnips, and some winter onions are still in the ground. Potatoes will be soon ready to chit, leek & some cabbage can be sown soon. My  Dahlia tubers (flowers) are in my shed in some compost waiting for more light then shoots will then appear, Its imperative that dahlia tubers are kept frost free. Keep digging”

Great photograph taken by our Mick Cooper on 29.3.16 picture of a red kite bird .This magnificently graceful bird of prey unmistakable with it’s redish brown body,angled wings,and deeply forked tail.The Red Kite was saved from national extinction by one of the worlds longest running protection programme’s.

This Red Kite was flying over Old Lane Allotments.
