June 2017 Newsletter

Will June be the end of May? Election news…Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn gave presenters of the One Show pots of jam made from his allotment . Corbyn has said he will not give up his allotment if he becomes prime minister.

The Labour leader said he believed he would be able to fit in time for digging, planting and pruning around his busy schedule at No 10 and that working on the allotment would help him as prime minister by giving him “time to think”.Corbyn, a vegetarian, has long tended a plot in East Finchley, near his north London home, where he grows maize, beans and pumpkins as well as fruit to make jam.

Asked whether there was any part of him which would prefer to be on the allotment rather than in No 10, he told Channel 4 News: “It’s possible to do both because if you grow plants and look after your garden, it gives you time to think, it gives you a connection with the natural world and makes you stronger in everything else you do.”

As one joker announced “This election is a win win situation for allotment holders. If Corbyn wins he is one of them and will be supportive, if the Tories get back in….. millions will need allotments to feed themselves.”

Can You Help with these 3 things?

1. Can everyone make sure the gates are kept locked at all times.

2. Check out your plot to make sure the plot number is displayed prominently.

3. If anyone has any suggestions about how to improve things or offers of help there is now a suggestion box in the toilet .

Polite Notice

It has been decided by our allotment committee to permanently lock one of our entrance gates on our site (bottom entrance Old Lane access) this gate has been left open on many occasions causing a risk to security.

Please can all plot holders use the alternative entrance on St Anthony’s Drive.

Thankyou

Mark Burton -My first Blog

Hello to everyone – this is my first blog for our website I was on the allotments today everybody looked really busy planting up all different varieties of plants.

We had some rain in the early hours of the morning doesn’t take long for the weeds to spring into action, everybody deserves a big thumbs up our allotment site looks really pleasing on the eye and you can tell everybody is putting in the effort. We have planted some flowers in the borders of our grassed garden area next to our main hut building which looks really colourful.

Talking to some of the plot holders today and everyone says that Country File on BBC1 seven o clock every Sunday gives a really accurate weather forecast for the week.

See you all soon.

Plot holder Profile
Mark Burton Plot 14 -Profile

“I originally helped my Dad on his allotment plot for about 2 years
so I had some knowledge of planting and growing vegetables from seed.

Sadly my Dad passed away so I had a decision to make. My Dad started
his plot in 1998 and was Chairman along the way so I thought it would be a good to follow in his footsteps. So I joined the Committee,.

Everybody made me so welcome and it helps me emotionally deal with the loss of my dad.

I am now on the committee playing
an important part helping with plot letting and stores .It’s really great being involved
in a community based project like Old Lane Allotment Association.”

Patronising Radio 4 Documentary

At a time when we have the most famous Allotment holder hoping to become our next Prime Minister (the newsletter author has £20 on him at 7/1) here is a largely patronizing view of allotments tinged with racist comments.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ng89n – Alan Dein visits a Hastings allotment and finds that a plot of land means a lot more to people than a place to grow vegetables. He joins various allotmenteers as they tend their plots.

Photo Gallery Updated

We’ve just finished uploading a shed load of photos to the website so that you can get a feel for the place and see how it looks. Take a look and let us know what you think.

If you’re a plotholder and want to share some photos then speak to Ashley, Mark or Stephen about how to get them to us.

Thanks for the contributions so far!

Highlights from the March newsletter

The seed potatoes have arrived and have been sorted and divided up. If you have ordered some you need to see Mick Hogan to arrange payment and collection .

We are aware that plot holders have suffered
theft and destruction in  their own huts and  buildings. We need all plot holders to report any theft and damage directly to the police. The local police have told us that if we report the thefts as a block it only counts as a single crime! Therefore we are asking plot holders to ring 101 or e mail: innersouth@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

The Committee has written to the residents who live alongside the allotments to ask them to help us in the fight against theft and vandalism…..see below…

Installation of an intruder Alarm
Dear Residents,
During the last few months we have experienced a number of break-ins resulting in theft, structural damage and graffiti on our allotment site. Due to these circumstances we have installed a intruder alarm system. In the event of the alarm sounding please could you contact West Yorkshire Police ringing 999 to report the incident. We hope we can all work together to reduce crime in the Beeston area. We hope this doesn’t cause any undue inconvenience.”
